MONTSERRAT & CAVES
ITINERARY
Enjoy
a full day guided tour from Barcelona to Montserrat. For over 8 hours
live the legends of the Monastery and Museum of Montserrat, with
works by artists such as El Greco, Picasso or Salvador Dalí, and
descend into the fascinating underground world of the magic mountain,
in the intimate atmosphere of a private group.
The
mountain of Montserrat, internationally renowned for its physiognomy
and its Monastery, hides a subterranean world almost unknown: a wide
range of galleries and caves that run through the seemingly compact
mountain of Montserrat.
The
tour begins with a visit to the Monastery of St. Maria of Montserrat
founded in 1025, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Spain.
During a rise of more than 700 meters high we will contemplate the
stunning panoramic views of Catalonia and the Pyrenees.
In the
Basilica we will admire La Moreneta, the Black Madonna, patron saint
of Catalonia. Among the different activities taking place in the
Basilica the choir stands out, being one the oldest children choirs
in Europe, dating from the 13th century.
Then
we will have free time to visit the museum or discover the Holy Cave
where according to tradition the Black Madonna was discovered.
After
visiting Monserrat we will set off for Collbató, the entry door to
Montserrat. There we will descend into the inside of the magic
mountain and tour around the 400 meters of galleries of Salnitre’s
Cave.
Expert
guides will describe the features resulting from the geological
process that shaped the cavity, decorated with stalagmites and
stalactites, and show us the habitat of the first Neolithic settlers,
thousands of years ago.
After
visiting the caves we will have lunch in a typical Catalan restaurant
and we will return to Barcelona where we will say goodbye at 4.30 pm.
